Start with these troubleshooting tips: 

• Check the hose for kinks or bends (reduces flow). 
• Keep the base centered and clear of leaves/debris. 
• The hose end and siphon outlet must be lower than the unit to prime siphon action. 
• Make sure the valve is in the ON position (tightened). 
• Water will not flow uphill. 
• Pre-filling the hose with water can help siphon start faster.

Sand filter systems: Install the slice valve on the front of the pump where the wall skimmer hose would normally connect. Then attach the hose to the slice valve.

Cartridge filter systems: There are typically two slice valves: 

• One on the front of the pump (skimmer line side) 
• One on the filter outlet where the return hose normally connects 

Most Swimline filter pumps do not have an onboard power switch. They are designed to be used with an external switch like a timer. Without an external switch, the pump must be plugged/unplugged to run.

Bring the old cord to a hardware/electrical store and match it with a replacement cord of the same type and rating. 

The 71405 pump cord length is 6 feet.

First, confirm the union is fully seated and tightened properly. The union should be tightened before the union hardware is tightened. If it still leaks, contact support. 

A low PSI reading usually indicates a flow restriction or leak (air leak, suction restriction, blockage, or system leak). Check hoses and fittings for leaks and confirm water is flowing freely into the pump.

Common causes: 

• Dirty filter (pressure may rise vs baseline) 
• Blocked suction line 
• Too much backpressure (worn sand, needs backwash/rinse) 
• Air in the line requiring bleeding/priming 

Many systems run around 10-15 PSI, but the best reference is your normal baseline when the system is clean and running properly. If PSI rises to ~10 PSI above your baseline, it’s typically time to backwash or inspect for restriction. If PSI is consistently 20+, check for blockage or valve issues. 

The most common causes are: 

• The multiport valve is not fully set to the correct position 
• A valve gasket/seal is worn or mis-seated 
• A valve or tank component is damaged If you can’t resolve by confirming valve position and checking seals, contact a pool technician or support.

That clear tube is the air relief valve/internal air bleeder. It releases trapped air from the system so the filter can operate efficiently and maintain proper flow.

Use #20 silica sand (pool filter sand) only. Do not use play sand or construction sand.

Common causes: 

• Incorrect sand grade or not enough sand (#20 recommended) 
• Not backwashing first (silica dust can flush into pool) 
• Standpipe seal issue (O-ring) 
• Cracked standpipe 
• Damaged laterals (often from excessive backwashing - keep backwash runs to 60-90 seconds) 

Water flows from the pool through the skimmer to the pump, then through the filter tank and back to the pool. Skimmer baskets capture large debris. Many Swimline systems also include a secondary basket (“hair & lint trap”) to protect the motor. 

Note: Some models (like 71225 and 70026) do not include the secondary basket. Optional add-ons like the Basket Buddy can help reduce fine debris entering the system.

On many 4-way valves, Backwash = Waste. For a cleaner cycle, you can run a short Rinse after Backwash, then return to Filter/Filtration.

Approximately 1,200 gallons per hour max flow rate. It’s generally recommended that pool water turns over at least once every 24 hours, and the pump should not run more than 12 hours per 24-hour period.

Important: Never change valve settings while the pump is running. 

• Filter: Normal operation - filters water through sand. 
• Backwash: Reverses flow to flush debris out through the waste line. 
• Rinse: Clears remaining debris after backwash before returning to Filter. 
• Waste: Bypasses sand and sends water out of the system (useful for vacuuming to waste). 
• Recirculate: Circulates water without filtering (useful when you don’t want media filtering out additives). 
• Winterize: Suspends the diverter to allow room for water expansion during freezing conditions. 

The system uses: 

• 1x 71607 
• 2x 6206 (1.5" x 7') 

On many HydroTools gauges, the 0-10 PSI range is marked in 2.5 PSI increments (0, 2.5, 5, 7.5, 10). Above 10 PSI, markings may shift to 2 PSI increments for improved precision at higher pressures

Yes - condensation is commonly caused by temperature changes. It should clear and typically does not affect gauge operation. 

It fits all adjustable poles, but may not meet code for commercial use. Many commercial standards require a straight, non-adjustable pole (not sold by Swimline).
