Liners & Covers (Retail Purchases)
What is an Optimum pool cover, and how do I install it?
What is an Optimum pool cover, and how do I install it?
An Optimum cover is a vinyl pool cover with an attached bead that locks into a receiver track (often a double-sided receiver).
How installation works (high level):
- The receiver typically mounts under the top rail on the pool wall.
- The beaded edge inserts into the receiver track (usually on the outside of the pool wall under the rail).
The cover then stretches over the pool like a “drum cover.” Note: Some Optimum covers use an inside receiver mounted on the inside wall above the liner receiver.
Optimum covers - do they install smooth side up or dull side up?
Optimum covers - do they install smooth side up or dull side up?
Optimum covers install based on bead orientation - the bead locks in one direction. The smooth vs dull side does not matter.
Why is water seeping through the top of my winter cover?
Why is water seeping through the top of my winter cover?
Unless there’s a visible hole or tear, minor seepage can be normal because many winter covers are woven, not fully solid.
- Tip: If the pool water is drained below the skimmer, seepage should be minimal.
Cover Saver note (Item #5436): When pumping water off the cover with a Cover Saver, it draws water from the sides, so it removes cover water (rain/snow melt) rather than pulling water from the pool itself.
How many grommets are on an above-ground winter cover?
How many grommets are on an above-ground winter cover?
Typically:
- Above-ground covers: 2 grommets every 2 feet
- In-ground covers: 1 grommet every 4 feet
How do I install a beaded or unibead liner so it fits properly?
How do I install a beaded or unibead liner so it fits properly?
Use the N/S/E/W method for best alignment and fit:
- Align the liner as evenly as possible.
- Insert the bead (or hang unibead/overlap).
- Clamp/hang the liner at North, South, East, and West first.
- Install the remaining sections in between.
This helps avoid pushing material around the perimeter and ending up with too much drag in one area.
Important installation notes:
- The liner should sit on top of a 4-6 inch cove where the wall meets the floor.
- Begin filling and continue filling - the liner will settle as water weight increases.
- Watch pool walls during fill. If they start to buckle, push them back into position while filling.
Critical warning: Do not stop filling or leave the pool without water overnight. Vinyl can shrink - and this may void warranty.
If your liner doesn’t fit well, check:
- Temperature: Install at 65°F+ whenever possible (vinyl shrinks/stiffens below 65°F).
- Pool shape: Has the pool shifted or been altered?
- Base prep: 2 inches of fine sand/foam + a proper 4-6 inch cove.
- Level: Is the pool level?
- Alignment: Was the liner installed evenly using the N/S/E/W method?
How do I maintain my pool liner after installation?
How do I maintain my pool liner after installation?
Follow these liner care basics to protect vinyl, appearance, and warranty coverage:
1) Keep water chemistry balanced
- Maintain proper water balance to prevent wrinkling, scaling, bleaching, and premature aging.
- Always dissolve chlorine/shock before adding - do not allow concentrated chemicals to sit on the liner.
2) Do not drain the pool
- Draining can stress and shrink the liner and may void warranty.
- You can usually clean a pool without draining.
3) Weekly cleaning & maintenance
- Skim debris from the surface.
- Vacuum the pool bottom.
- Gently brush liner walls with a soft brush to prevent buildup.
Common liner stains
- Organic stains: algae, leaves, weather (brown/green).
- Metal stains: ladders/heaters/hardware contact.
- Waterline ring: calcium or undissolved chemicals.
4) Prevent sharp objects
- Keep sharp items and non-pool-safe toys away from the liner.
5) Winter protection
- Use a pool cover and air pillow (if applicable).
- Drain standing water from the cover to reduce wear.

How do I operate the Cover Saver (Item #5436)?
How do I operate the Cover Saver (Item #5436)?
Start with these troubleshooting tips:
- Check the hose for kinks or bends (reduces flow).
- Keep the base centered and clear of leaves/debris.
- The hose end and siphon outlet must be lower than the unit to prime siphon action.
- Make sure the valve is in the ON position (tightened).
- Water will not flow uphill.
- Pre-filling the hose with water can help siphon start faster.
If you still need help, contact support and include photos of your setup.
How do I install slice valves (if included)?
How do I install slice valves (if included)?
Sand filter systems: Install the slice valve on the front of the pump where the wall skimmer hose would normally connect. Then attach the hose to the slice valve.
Cartridge filter systems: There are typically two slice valves:
- One on the front of the pump (skimmer line side)
- One on the filter outlet where the return hose normally connects

Why is my pressure gauge reading lower than normal?
Why is my pressure gauge reading lower than normal?
A low PSI reading usually indicates a flow restriction or leak (air leak, suction restriction, blockage, or system leak). Check hoses and fittings for leaks and confirm water is flowing freely into the pump.
Why is there no pressure coming out of the return?
Why is there no pressure coming out of the return?
Common causes:
- Dirty filter (pressure may rise vs baseline)
- Blocked suction line
- Too much backpressure (worn sand, needs backwash/rinse)
- Air in the line requiring bleeding/priming
What is a “good PSI” for a sand filter?
What is a “good PSI” for a sand filter?
Many systems run around 10-15 PSI, but the best reference is your normal baseline when the system is clean and running properly. If PSI rises to ~10 PSI above your baseline, it’s typically time to backwash or inspect for restriction. If PSI is consistently 20+, check for blockage or valve issues.
Water is leaking from the waste line on my sand filter - what does that mean?
Water is leaking from the waste line on my sand filter - what does that mean?
The most common causes are:
- The multiport valve is not fully set to the correct position
- A valve gasket/seal is worn or mis-seated
- A valve or tank component is damaged If you can’t resolve by confirming valve position and checking seals, contact a pool technician or support.

- Cracked standpipe
- Damaged laterals (often from excessive backwashing - keep backwash runs to 60-90 seconds)
How does sand filter circulation work with the motor and baskets?
How does sand filter circulation work with the motor and baskets?
Water flows from the pool through the skimmer to the pump, then through the filter tank and back to the pool. Skimmer baskets capture large debris. Many Swimline systems also include a secondary basket (“hair & lint trap”) to protect the motor.
Note: Some models (like 71225 and 70026) do not include the secondary basket. Optional add-ons like the Basket Buddy can help reduce fine debris entering the system.

What do the Filter / Backwash / Rinse / Waste / Recirculate / Winterize settings do?
What do the Filter / Backwash / Rinse / Waste / Recirculate / Winterize settings do?
Important: Never change valve settings while the pump is running.
- Filter: Normal operation - filters water through sand.
- Backwash: Reverses flow to flush debris out through the waste line.
- Rinse: Clears remaining debris after backwash before returning to Filter.
- Waste: Bypasses sand and sends water out of the system (useful for vacuuming to waste).
- Recirculate: Circulates water without filtering (useful when you don’t want media filtering out additives).
- Winterize: Suspends the diverter to allow room for water expansion during freezing conditions.
